ABC: An Interactive Book on Crystallography by G.L. Cascarano, C. Giacovazzo, A. Pifferi and G. Polidori, is a teaching tool aimed at helping students gaining a better understandig of the basics of crystallography. It was originally added as a CD-ROM to the 2nd Edition of the volume "Fundamentals of Crystallography" by C. Giacovazzo et al. (Oxford University Press, 2002).
The full content of the CD-ROM is now online and can be run directly from any modern web browser under Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, provided that the computer has at least 128 MB of RAM and a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.5 or newer is installed.
If you are using Windows and are not sure about your Java version, please go to java.com and the Web site will automatically install the latest Java software. If you are a Mac OS X user, please run the "Software Update" wizard (available on the Apple menu) to check that you have the most up-to-date version of Java for your Mac. If you are using Linux, you need to check the support site of your distribution for information about the Java packages available for your system. Otherwise, you can go to java.com and click on the Do I have Java? link.
Please note that the Java Virtual Machine needs considerable computing horse power to run. Do not try to run ABC if you are still using Windows 98, Mac OS 10.2, or older operating systems.
